Message to future medical students

There will be times when that voice is sweet and serene, barely heard above the chaos and distractions that seem to surround us. Sometimes that voice is a clarion cry, so loud that everyone in the room hears what you’re saying. The message, however, will be the same in both cases. It will notify you and those you care about that you are present, capable, and willing to bring your whole self to the task at hand, to the people for whom you are responsible.

A career is far more than a job. You don’t only take up space or time during the day. You do not just comply with your boss’ whims and commands. A professional is fiercely independent when it comes to holding oneself or herself accountable for what is expected; but, a professional is part of a larger community of like-minded individuals who, together, promote principles and goals that they share.

Take use of these years to refine your voice and give it something to say. Learn the knowledge and skills you’ll need to become the expert that your career and future patients will demand of you. Most importantly, make time to reflect. Make the profession your own and dedicate yourself completely to it. Learn how to combine your voice with the voices of others who have gone before you so that you can be heard independently yet in harmony. Learn to speak from your heart rather than a script, and with all the strength you can muster. Only then can your message be heard by everyone in your immediate proximity.
