Situated in Sinamangal, Nepal, a medical college which is permanently affiliated to Kathmandu University and fully recognised by the Medical Council of Nepal, Sri Lankan Medical Council, General Medical Council (UK) and Medical Council of India, Kathmandu Medical College is a major medical facility institution which serves its best purpose as one of the best colleges.

Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital has also been listed in the WHO’s World Directory of Medical Schools electronic format as from June 2002. Following full recognition by NMC, KMCTH is also listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.It was also listed in the now discontinued International Medical Education Directory (IMED). KMC is an Associate Member of the Network towards Unity for Health (TUFH) that has its headquarters at Glent in Belgium. Established in 1977, the college has a glorious reputation for giving the society some of its best servicemen, working as doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals.

The whole project has two functioning buildings built specially to suit the specific needs of imparting the best possible skills in Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences in Duwakot and Sinamangal respectively.

Eligibility for admission in Kathmandu Medical College:

The following conditions and criterion must be met by the willing candidate for acceptance into Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital for the MBBS degree. These standards have been set following the strict guidelines of Nepal Medical College and the Kathmandu University:

  1. The candidate must have completed their 17 years of age.
  2. They must have passed their 10+2 standard or Intermediate of Science (I.Sc) with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry and their major subjects and must not have less than 50% marks in the average aggregate calculated on the basis of these major subjects.

OR

Have completed a bachelor’s degree in any of the subjects: Physics, Chemistry or Biology (B.Sc) from a recognised University, and has studied one other science subject till the ancillary level , with not less than a 50% aggregate and meets the above condition and aggregate requirements of the 10+2 standard.

  • Resident Nepali students have to take the KUMET exam, which is considered to be the determinant of merit for admission to this college. Students who are applying from foreign countries and Non Resident Nepali students will have to forward their application to the college for perusal and acceptance of their admission into Kathmandu Medical College. Such documents will be needed to get authorized from the Ministry of External Affairs of the student’s resident country and by the Embassy of Nepal.

Courses offered:

The following courses are offered in Kathmandu Medical College:

  1. MBBS
  2. Post Graduate studies in medicine
  3. BDS
  4. B.Sc Nursing

MBBS: Bachelor ofMedicine and Bachelor of Surgery

A seat of 100 students (on an average) is maintained for students opting for MBBS in Kathmandu Medical College.

These students are purely selected on basis of merit for a time period of 4½ years. The course starts from the month of August every year.

The departments of the college includes:

  2. Department of Community Medicine
  3. Biochemistry
  4. Microbiology
  5. Pathology
  6. Pharmacology
  7. Physiology

PG courses:The MD (Pathology) was started from 2003. MD/MS in clinical areas Medicine, Surgery, Paediatric, Gyane/Obs and Anaesthesia has started from February 2009. Newly qualified graduates of Kathmandu Medical College can sit for Part-1 examination being conducted in October and March. After passing the examination, fellowship is available at Kathmandu Medical College in five different areas. Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital is recognized as a centre for the training of fellowship of the college of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) in five specialties. Candidates who have passed the CPSP part-1 should apply to Kathmandu Medical College for a post at the teaching hospital. There are presently 34 slots available in the specialties concerned.

Bachelor in Nursing Sciences Program:

This is a 4 year undergraduate program for training and producing efficient and competent nurses who are well skilled and properly qualified to handle something as fragile as healthcare issues.

Kathmandu Medical College has been imparting B.Sc nursing programs from February 2006, M.Sc nursing training from May 2019 and BNS from August 2019. It is affiliated to Kathmandu University but also recognized and acknowledged by the Nepal Nursing Council.  The program starts from August every year and the B.Sc nursing program has been extremely successful in producing over three hundred graduate nurses who are fully eligible for professionally treating patients. The rate of success is 100% in Kathmandu University final examinations and the course fee is quite affordable.

For both International and National Students willing to complete their BNS with KMC, the minimum criteria are that the candidate should have:

  • Completed 3years of certificate level of nursing from a recognised institute and should have secured an aggregate of 50% marks.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical or teaching experience after successful completion of the certificate nursing course.
  • Be registered with Nepal Nursing Council.

Selection Criteria

  • Candidates selection will be done on the basis of KU entrance examination followed by counselling.
  • Candidates will be selected on the basis of merit.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS):

This is a 4½ year course with one year of compulsory internship after the final examinations.

The first two years are allotted to the teaching of basic Medical Sciences and Dental science subjects and the remaining two years are allotted to Part II: Dental Clinical Sciences subjects including community Dentistry/Medical Clinical Sciences Subjects. In case a student fails to secure a pass mark in Part I, he/she/they will not be promoted to Part II.

The criteria for admission to this course are as follows: (for both national and international applicants)

Students may contact KMC for forms, prospectus or other details. Nepali and foreign students will have to take Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination and admissions are strictly according to the merit.

The candidates eligible for admission should have (both national and international applicants):

  1. Passed 10+2 Science (Biology Group) or Equivalent securing at least 50% separately in

Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 50% aggregate in total marks OR

Secured at least C+ grade separately in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least C

grade in remaining individual subjects along with GPA 2.4 OR

Secured the Percentage equivalent to above eligibility in regards to the certificate level

programs (A-Level) with different grading system

OR

  1. Applicants who have passed the Health Science Proficiency Certificate Level /Diploma

(General Medicine, Medical Lab Technology, Ophthalmic Science, Dental Science,

Pharmacy, Ayurveda, Radiography, Physiotherapy) with Certificate of Equivalence to

Grade 12 Science program from National Examination Board AND

  1. Secured at least 50% separately in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 50% aggregate

in total marks both in Diploma and the Examination for Equivalence AND

  1. Registered in Nepal Health Professional council or Nepal Pharmacy Council or Nepal

Ayurveda Council as per related educational program.

M.Sc Nursing :

This course is for a period of two years. Candidates eligible for this course must be (both national and international applicants):

  • Completed 4 years B. Sc. Nursing or minimum of 3 years Bachelor in Nursing Sciences (BNS) from a recognised University and secured an aggregate of 60% marks.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical or teaching experience after successful completion of Bachelor degree.
  • Be registered with Nepal Nursing Council.

Selection Criteria

  • Candidates selection will be done on the basis of KU entrance examination followed by counselling.
  • Candidates will be selected on the basis of merit.
