What is MEC Nepal (Medical Education Commission mec.gov.np)?

According to the National Medical Education Act of 2075, the Medical Education Commission Nepal or MEC Nepal (mec.gov.np) is responsible for conducting Common Entrance Examinations at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The commission decided it was necessary to prepare a common syllabus in cooperation with specialists from various institutions that have experience with DM/MCh entrance tests in order to administer the DM/MCh common entrance examination working under the name of MEC Nepal (mec.gov.np).

According to the National Medical Education Act of 2075 B.S., in the context of the essence and spirit of the commission’s reports, At various times, a task committee was organized to improve medical education-

The Medical Education Commission was founded to-

  • Boost the government’s investment in medical education;
  • Develop medical education to meet Nepal’s national needs; and
  • Organize and control medical education in a coordinated and efficient manner.
  • Plan and organize the tasks involved in the establishment and operation of medical facilities,
  • Ensure that all students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have equal access to medical education by maintaining quality, professionalism, institutional responsibility, geographic balance, and social justice.

Medical education is defined by the Act as all disciplines and degrees of education linked to the health profession (Health Professional Education).

The MEC Nepal (mec.gov.np) has proposed a new rule that would result in the revocation of licenses for schools and institutions that do not receive at least 70% in their evaluation for two years in a row. The panel proposes to evaluate medical colleges and nursing institutes after finalizing ten compliance indicators based on their quality of their infrastructure, service, equipment, and teaching staff. “If they do not achieve a minimum of 70% for two years in a row, the commission might suggest that the university’s license be revoked chairman of the commission. According to numerous studies, Nepalese medical colleges lack infrastructure and qualified teaching staff.

According to reports, some universities employed temporary faculty, especially from India, to show inspectors when they came for inspections. According to the draught regulation, which is being implemented in response to concerns about the quality of medical and nursing education in the country, colleges’ research, the quality of their hostels and their performance in terms of social responsibility will all be examined.

According to MEC Nepal (mec.gov.np) regulations, all medical colleges must evaluate themselves using the commission’s criteria. The commission will subsequently appoint a team of specialists to verify the evaluations. Colleges that obtain less than a 70% grade will be given a year to improve. The commission intends to classify each college into one of three categories based on its score. Institutions with a score of more than 90% will be labelled as ‘A,’ those with a score of 80 to 90% will be labeled as ‘B,’ and those with a score of 70 to 80 will be labelled as ‘C.’ Colleges with a score of less than 70 will fail the evaluation

Syllabus for DM/MCh Level Entrance Examination (2024)

Introduction:

After the founding of the Institute of Medicine under Tribhuvan University in 1972, health professional mec in Nepal (mec.gov.np) began with the training of middle-level human resources for health. The Institute of Medicine began offering bachelor’s degree programmers in 1978, and postgraduate studies in 1982. Similarly, the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences was founded in eastern Nepal in 1993, and the Manipal Academy of Health Sciences was founded in 1993 as a Kathmandu University affiliated private university. In 2001, the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences began offering an MBBS admission in Nepal as a constituent campus. The National Academy of Medical Sciences was established at that time in 2002 and Patan Academy of Health Sciences in 2008.

Throughout the country, multiple private medical institutions have been built since the late 1990s to support the teaching and learning of various bachelor and postgraduate level medical admission in Nepal.

In line with worldwide trends and developments in the field of medical education, Nepalese universities saw the necessity to begin higher level specialized courses. Kathmandu University began the DM/ MCh program in Nepal in Bir Hospital in 1999. In 2004, the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) took over the DM/MCh programme, beginning with MCh programmes. Similarly, the Institute of Medicine began offering a DM/ MCh degree in 2008 (beginning with MCh programmes), and the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences began offering it in 2013.

Foreign students interested in studying at government medical colleges such as BP Koirala, Patan Academy of Health Science, Institute of Medicine, Katmandu University School of Medicine, Nepalese Army, and Karnali Academy of Health Science must take the MEC Entrance Examination. To take the MEC Nepal CEE (Common Entrance Examination), students must fill out an application form and pay the prescribed application fee. Objectives:

Creating a single syllabus for particular academic program for the DM/MCh common entrance test

To reach a consensus and fit the existing DM/MCh MEC Nepal entrancesyllabuses in use at various medical institutions rationally.

To determine the scope of improvements/innovations in the currently existing DM/MCh entrance examination Process, institutions that conduct DM/MCh entrance examinations were formally invited to send the current DM/MCh programmes they are conducting, as well as the entrance test syllabus.

Various institutions’ syllabuses for related fields were constructed.

With the use of existing collated documents, a team of specialists in related areas representing multiple institutions developed a unified syllabus.

Meetings were held with the heads of concerned institutions and regulatory authorities.

A consensus was reached on having a three-page entrance exam paper in hour’s duration with 200 multiple choice questions to improve content coverage as well as to match with the recent practice. This will also aid in candidate distinction by reducing the number of candidates who have the same grade.

Multiple choice questions (MCQs) will be of the Single Best Response Type (Type A) with four options, with the paper setter being instructed to keep the stem or vignette of the MCQs under 60 words.

Adopt a Criterion-Referenced Test with a pass mark of 50% and no negative marking.
