Medical Education in Nepal
Medical education in Nepal has a long history, with the first medical school, the Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine, established in 1972. Since then, several other medical schools have been established in Nepal, both public and private, offering undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Medical education in Nepal is regulated by the Nepal Medical Council, which sets standards for medical education and practice in the country. The council also oversees the accreditation of medical schools, and issues licenses to medical professionals.
Currently, there are 22 medical colleges in Nepal, including government-run institutions and private medical colleges. Most of these medical colleges are affiliated with universities and offer courses in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other health sciences. The undergraduate medical education program in Nepal is called MBBS, which stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The program generally takes 5 and a half years to complete, followed by a one-year internship.
In addition to undergraduate medical education, Nepal also offers postgraduate medical education, including residency programs in various specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and others. There are also a few universities in Nepal that offer higher degrees in medicine, such as MD and PhD.
