About KU School of Medical Sciences

Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) is one of Kathmandu University’s premier schools, offering medical, nursing, and allied health science programmes. KUSMS is a joint initiative of Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. The main office of KUSMS is located on the grounds of Dhulikhel Hospital, a Kathmandu University hospital in Nepal’s Kavrepalanchok District. KUSMS was founded in 1994. The first medical college to be given affiliation was Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Pokhara. Since then, KUSMS has provided affiliation to a number of medical schools across the country.

On September 7, 2001, KU School of Medical Sciences formally launched its own medical training programme, the MBBS programme, in collaboration with Dhulikhel Hospital. The first class consisted of 43 Nepali students. KUSMS Day is observed every year on this day. Although the medical school is still commonly referred to as KUSMS both within and outside the country, its name was changed to Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) in 2006 to reflect the fact that it not only trains medical undergraduates and postgraduates, but also offers nursing and allied health science programmes.
