Mass exodus amid a shortage of doctors
Even with this doctor scarcity, the Public Service Commission has not issued vacancy calls to fill existing positions in four years. Since the announcement of a vacancy for 100 doctors in 2017, not a single permanent doctor has been hired by the government. As the employment process for health workers has been delayed, even doctors who have earned scholarships to complete their medical degree have gone abroad. Doctors who work for the government are eligible for government subsidies to finish their MD/MS degrees, which is why many doctors wish to work at government hospitals. They are, however, unable to conduct exams because the Public Service Commission does not conduct them.
