Pokhara University was established in the year 1997 under the Pokhara University Act, 1997. The Incumbent Honorable Prime Minister and the Honorable Minister for Education of the Federal Democratic Republic Nepal are the Chancellor and the Pro-Chancellor, respectively. The Chancellor appoints the Vice Chancellor, the principal executive officer of the university. The Registrar is designated to assist him/her in financial management and general administration. A non-profit autonomous institution, PU is partly funded by the Government of Nepal and partly by revenues from its students and affiliated colleges.

Pokhara University, FMS, will conduct Management Admission Test (PUMAT), which will include 100 objective questions with 5 options: Verbal ability 25, Quantitative ability 25, Logical Reasoning 25, and General Awareness 25. Duration of the Examination -2 hrs. After the Dean’s office publishes the Merit List of the PUMAT, the candidates who qualified the test will have to apply for ad mission to the program and college of their The Final Merit Score will be published by the concerned colleges after including the mark scored by the student in Personal Interview and mark allocated for their previous academic achievements/records. The Final Merit Score will be the basis for admission.
MECEE UG stands for Medical Education Commission Entrance Examination (Nepal UG Medical Entrance Exam). It is a common entrance examination conducted in Nepal for providing admission in medical postgraduate courses.

Pokhara University has been running various programs under Faculties of Management, Science and Technology, Health Science and Humanities and Social Sciences. Under these streams, there are 27 programs including 14 in Bachelors Degree, 11 in Masters and the 2 in PhD are into full-fledged operation in its constituent Colleges and Council at Kudi, Dhungepatan in Pokhara Lekhanath. On the other hand, there are 21 programs in Masters, 1 in Mphil, 25 in Bachelors and 1 in Post Graduate Diploma programs are being run in its affiliated campuses all over the country.
Pokhara University has four faculties. They are Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Management Studies and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Management Studies were established in 1997 under the Pokhara University Act. Likewise Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in 2004 and Faculty of Health Sciences was established in 2016.

Pokhara University, aiming at making higher education accessible to the underprivileged section of society, provides scholarships to 10 percent of approved quota of students in affiliated Colleges and 20 percent in constituent schools. The graduates from government and non-government schools or colleges are eligible to apply for scholarships and financial supports. The PU Scholarship Selection Examination decides to award scholarships based on applicants’ credentials, economic background, examination followed by an interview.
Pokhara University is an established university with the highest participation of private sector in conducting accessible and quality educational programs. Therefore, as it places more emphasis on the expansion of the private sector colleges, there are only 4 constitute colleges of its colleges and 4 joint constitute colleges. Pokhara University has given affiliation to 58 colleges till date.
